Segregation refers to the seperation of races, where one is considered lesser than the other. In the united states, Jim Crow Laws were the laws of segregation. Segregation mostly came from slavery. The emancipation proclamation in 1863 claimed all people, slaves and not, are equal. And although the thirteenth amendment abolished slavery in 1865, Black people and White people still weren't equal.
This was a particularly big issue in the 1800's into the later 1900's, and is argueably still happening today. In Maya Angelou's novel 'I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings', segregation is depicted by the role in which Maya and her family plays in society. She is looked down upon by all of the white people but still tries to make sure it doesn't get to her. It is also shown when the poor white children in the town ridicule Maya's Grandmother, and she can't do anything about it.
It should be understood that the actions of the White people in this book are barbaric and cruel. The most horrific part is that her story is non-fiction from her own life. Some of the things read in this book seems to horrid to be real. If everyone understood the consequences segregation has had on the social advancment of the united states, then we could be looked at as much more of an advanced country.
